The Net Zero Series: Sustainable Industry

The 4th webinar in the UKRI’s Net Zero series focuses on Industry which accounts for around one sixth of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. More efficient manufacturing practices, higher recycling rates, electrification, hydrogen, renewable power and carbon capture can together help cut industrial emissions by 2/3rds by 2035, and by over 90% by 2050.

This session looked to answer some of the following questions:
How do you decarbonise the energy and carbon-intensive industries that provide many of the building blocks for the modern world?
What low-carbon technologies can increase the competitiveness of industry and contribute to the UK’s drive for clean growth?
How can we decarbonise the industries in their journeys to net-zero?
What role the industrial clusters can play in paving the path to zero carbon?

Speakers:
00.00: Introduction by Bryony Livesey, Industrial Decarbonisation Challenge Lead

08.10: Ben Kek on how the East Coast Cluster is working to decarbonise industry around Teesside and the Humber

17.20: Debbie Baker on the impact of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) infrastructure on industry

28.15: David Reinern, UK CCS Research Centre, on public attitudes towards CCS and Industrial Clusters

37.55: Katie Hedges, Director of Membership and Low Carbon Strategy at CATCH, on the societal benefits of industrial clustering

44.09: Niall MacDowell, Professor of Future Energy Systems, on the key research questions around sustainable industry

52.36: Panel discussion and Q &A

Are We Too Late To Stop Climate Change? | Carbon Nation | Spark

Carbon Nation is a feature length documentary about climate change SOLUTIONS. Even if you doubt the severity of the impact of climate change or just don’t buy it at all, this is a compelling and relevant film that illustrates how SOLUTIONS to climate change also address other social, economic and national security issues. ‘Carbon Nation’ is an optimistic discovery of what people are already doing, what we as a nation could be doing and what the world needs to do to prevent (or slow down) the impending climate crisis.

U.S. Department of Energy’s Carbon Negative Shot Summit

Carbon Negative Shot is an all-hands-on-deck call for innovation in carbon dioxide removal pathways that will capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and durably store it at gigaton scales for less than $100/net metric ton of CO2-equivalent. Carbon dioxide removal, in conjunction with aggressive decarbonization, is a climate-critical activity required to reach our nation’s climate goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
